Senior Services:  Nutrition Services...

Proper nutrition is important for everyone, especially older adults.  Yet dietary problems are among the most serious issues facing the elderly. Nutritional deficiencies in older adults often involve life situations as much as specific health conditions.  Limited mobility from health problems, caring for an ill or disabled spouse, and lack of transportation can make food shopping difficult. Unexpected expenses can force a senior to reduce the amount spent on food in an attempt to manage on a limited income. Older adults living alone often feel that it is “too much trouble” to prepare nourishing meals for one person. Illness, medication and dental problems contribute to an inability to eat a balanced diet as well.

Finding a Solution:

All persons age 60 and over are eligible for services. However, emphasis is placed on helping older persons with the greatest social or economic need, particularly low-income and minority persons. Eligibility is determined by income and other factors, and some recipients are asked to pay a portion of meal costs.

Nutrition services include:

  • Home delivered meals
  • Meals served in a group setting at a Senior Citizen Center
  • Nutrition education and information
  • Homemaker assistance in shopping for food and preparing meals
  • Health screening and information
  • Respite care (in the home or at a Senior Center) allows family members caring for ill or disabled persons an opportunity to leave the home to shop for food
