Geographic Information System...

A GIS is a computer–based analytical tool consisting of software elements designed to store, retrieve, manipulate and display geographic data. It combines different layers of information about a place to provide you a better understanding of that place. The GIS staff at the Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center has the latest GIS technology and use it to assist communities in a variety of planning and development applications.

Applications include business and environmental modeling, transportation analyses, water plan development, land use and comprehensive planning, and capital improvement programming. The GIS can be used for mapping social, economic, and population characteristics, redistricting of electoral boundaries, and planning bicycle and pedestrians routes. We also use Global Positing Systems (GPS) satellite technology to locate and map features. An example of a regional GIS coverage is:
